Emma Bowen Scholarship

The Emma L. Bowen Foundation is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2014!

The Foundation was created in 1989 to prepare minority youth for careers in the media industry. The Foundation’s program is unlike traditional intern programs in that students work for partner companies during summers and school breaks from the summer following their senior year in high school until they graduate from college. During the four-year program, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to train and mentor students with the option of full-time employment upon completion of their college degrees.

Students earn an hourly salary and matching scholarship funds for college expenses. Academic excellence is also a key component of the program—students are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average to remain in good standing. The Foundation staff works closely with corporate partners to monitor each student’s academic and work progress. An annual summer conference, a mentoring program and a technical program are also provided to further enhance the student’s knowledge and experience. Resource guides for both students and corporate supervisors are provided to maximize the student’s experience and productivity while in the program.

This unique, multi-year program prepares a diverse group of talented young professionals to enter the workforce with specific job-related skills, knowledge of the corporate environment and a strong foundation for future advancement. Students work in a variety of functional areas (e.g., marketing, sales, finance, public relations, production, operations, human resources, technology, news, web design, promotion, etc.) and rotate each summer. Currently, we have more than 260 active students nationwide and 550 graduates. Approximately 60-70 new students join the program each year.

Myself Third Scholarship

The Myself Third Scholarship Program is designed to encourage and reward ten (10) NYC high
school students who have demonstrated a commitment to participating in civic engagement.
The scholarship program selects 10 CUNY‐bound high school seniors who are enrolled in or
have completed at least one College Now course or activity and who will attend college in fall
2014 a one‐time scholarship of $5,000 in support of their studies at CUNY.
Teachers/counselors may nominate up to two students and guide them through the
application process.
In order to be considered, students must submit a complete application package to their
College Now liaison by March 28th and should include the following:
 Essay on civic service (Service and volunteer experiences should be substantive and
not solely connected to high school community service requirements)
 Description of volunteer, work, and extracurricular activities
 Letter(s) of recommendation (Please note that recommenders must use the Letter
of Support template available on the College Now website. Generic and/or college
recommendation letters will not be accepted)
 Official academic transcript
In judging the applications, the quality of the essay, the personal experience described in it, as
well as the letter(s) of recommendation, and the service activity are the main criteria. In the
essay, students are asked to discuss 1) what it means to live in a democratic society and the
values they believe are associated with a democratic way of life; 2) how these values motivated
them to become involved in civic service; 3) describe a specific project or activity they
developed or participated in that provided service to others; and 4) reflect on the personal
impact of that experience.

Dr. Calvin Martin Memorial Scholarship

The Dr. Calvin Martin Memorial Scholarship Trust Fund Inc, a non-profit charitable organization, was named in memory of its founder Dr. Calvin Martin. His passion was a love for education.

The mission of the Scholarship Trust Fund is to educate African American Male Students through a scholar and mentorship program, to achieve higher academic excellence.   

The scholarships are available to students who demonstrate high academic achievements in high schools. They must be born in the USA and reside in the Tri-State area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

PTA Federation Essay Contest

Calling all Parents/Guardians/Caregivers of Seniors + SENIORS

It’s time to helicopter and swoop in on the scholarships.

This is a scholarship WE ARE URGING ALL SENIORS to take part in!! Your child could win $2000 for writing a 500 word essay on KINDNESS and how an act of kindness has made a difference in your life. EASY PEASY!

This scholarship is NOT need-based! ANYONE is eligible! The most important thing for you to know about this scholarship: A $2000 scholarship award is given to one graduate of EACH STATEN ISLAND PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL. That means that one student at McKee is guaranteed to win the $2000. BUT – if they don’t receive at least 3 applications from McKee, no one wins! COME AND GET THIS SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION FROM MS. ·        Staten Island Federation of Parent Teacher Associations $2000 Scholarship Award Essay Contest

·        A $2000 scholarship award is given to one graduate of EACH STATEN ISLAND PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL and one District 31 Special Education student. Any student in the January, June or August 2014 graduating class may apply. The scholarship award application can be obtained by your College Advisor/Guidance Counselor. It can also be accessed on the Federation website at www.sifpta.org.

The criteria is:

• Written essay based on this year’s essay question
• Completed student information sheet
• Essay recipient must be present to accept the award on June 2nd at the Scholarship Luncheon held at the Hilton Garden Inn

The essay, which is to be written by the student, is to be no more than 500 words (2 pages) and typed in a 14 point plain font with double spacing. Be advised that the student's name MUST NOT appear ANYWHERE on the essay.

Bayway Community Advisory Panel (CAP) Scholarship

The Bayway Community Advisory Panel (CAP) is a committee of community representatives from Linden, Rahway, Elizabeth and Staten Island including neighbors, educators, retirees, public officials, emergency responders, and environmentalists who attend monthly meetings that serve as a forum for dialogue between the community and company representatives from Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery, DuPont, Infineum USA L.P., and NAES/Linden Cogen Technologies.

Objectives of the CAP include:

-          Addressing the community’s safety, health, environmental, educational and civic issues, as well as perceptions and expectations

-          Disseminating factual information to the community in an unbiased manner

-          Discussing key company issues

-          Discussing and make recommendations on controversial matters

For the year 2014, the Bayway CAP has elected to offer High School Seniors who are residents of Linden, Rahway, Elizabeth, and Staten Island the opportunity to be awarded a municipality scholarship. A total of four (4) scholarships will be awarded - one $1,000 scholarship for each of the four municipalities. This scholarship is open to candidates who will be pursuing a college education in the Industrial, Process Technology, or Engineering fields.

The scholarship committee will also be taking the following areas into consideration when reviewing the applications:  attendance, extra curricular activities, community activities, and volunteerism.  The application should be prepared mainly by the student; assistance by others is permitted if necessary.

A Scholarship Awards Dinner will take place in May 2014.
