Middle and High Schools: Violet Richardson Award for Outstanding Girl Teen Volunteer

Soroptimist International is a global organization of professional women that provide community service through local clubs. Three area clubs – Manhattan, Staten Island and NYC – each present an annual cash award of $200-$1000 to a teenage girl (ages 14-17) who can demonstrate how her volunteer activities have contributed to the community and influenced her life. Middle and High Schools: 5th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest

High Schools: Essay Contest – Realizing the Dream; Equality for All

The Association of Supreme Court Justices of the State of New York and the New York Law Journal are sponsoring the 12th annual essay for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. Students are invited to write a 500 word essay presenting a compelling discussion on the role of the judicial system in “realizing the dream of equality for all.” Ten winners will be selected to intern for one week with a Justice of the Supreme Court, earn a $100 American Express gift card, and be eligible for publications in two premier New York State Law publications.

The Fund for Public Schools and the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation are pleased to invite applications for the Reginald F. Lewis Foundation Scholarship, which will award college scholarships to outstanding public high school seniors. It was proposed by Mrs. Loida Lewis, wife of the late business leader Reginald F. Lewis, to be a celebration of Mr. Lewis’ life and entrepreneurial spirit, and to provide meaningful support to students who embody Mr. Lewis’ commitment to getting ahead through education. High Schools: Scholarship—Maathai Award for Civic Participation in Sustainability

Inaugurated by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Midler Family Trust, and MillionTreesNYC, this is an annual $10,000 cash award granted to one female and one male New York City public high school senior. The award was established in honor of Dr. Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize (2004), founder of the Green Belt Movement, a tree-planting campaign to promote sustainable development, woman's empowerment, and democracy in Kenya.

Applicants for this award must:

• Be a senior in NYC public school intending to attend college in fall 2013

• Demonstrate commitment to and activity in civic engagement

• Demonstrate commitment to and activity in sustainability projects

• Provide evidence of having completed a sustainability project in high school that shows evidence of leadership, commitment to sustainability, mobilization of others

High Schools: Essay Contest – Law-Related Education

The New York County Lawyers’ Association is sponsoring their annual essay for high school students. Students are invited to write a 750-1000 word essay on the topic, “should a sports team be punished for the improper conduct off of the field of its players or coaches?” Winners will receive prizes of $1000 for first place, $750 for second place, $500 for third place, and $300 for fourth place.

All essays should be typewritten on 8.5 x 11 paper, in a 12 point font, double-spaced, with an inch margin on all sides. Final essays should average three to five pages, with page numbers marked on the bottom. No footnotes or endnotes needed. (If quotes are used, then the source must be cited in the body of the essay.) The student’s name, school, school phone number, and teacher should be clearly typed on the top of the first page of the essay. (No cover page necessary.)

Become PENCIL Fellows!

Do you have stellar students looking for meaningful job preparation and workplace experience?

Help them become PENCIL Fellows!

As part of the PENCIL network of schools, we are happy to offer an exciting opportunity for your students. The PENCIL Fellows Program trains select New York City public school juniors and seniors to be job-ready and places them in paid, six-week summer internships that help them take the first step toward a serious career in industries ranging across industries. Most placements are in science, math, technology, and engineering companies so students with career interests in these areas will be given preference.

The program includes training for students (covering topics such as resume- writing, interviewing skills, office technology, and networking) and a comprehensive network of support. By becoming a PENCIL Fellow, students not only learn the skills necessary to compete in today’s job market but will also have the opportunity to apply those skills in a paid internship placement.

Criteria for Schools: If interested in selecting students from your school to apply, please respond directly with the name and contact information (phone and email) of the person who will serve as the school’s contact. School leaders must play a role in selecting students from their school to apply (a guide for student selection is attached). Each school may select up to 5 students to participate in the program. (If your school has participated in past years please respond and confirm the name of the contact person.)

Criteria for Students:  Students must be 16 years or older, be a current public high school junior or senior in New York City, have a GPA of 3.0 or above, and have valid working papers. They must be available to work up to 40 hours a week from July 9^th to August 17^th. Because the majority of placements will be in science, math, technology, and engineering companies,   students with career interests in these areas will be given preference.

Application Process: Students are required to attend a trainings session (which will provide an overview of program expectations in addition to guidance on resume writing and interviewing), complete an online application, and participate in a 30-minute interview at PENCIL. Free Bilingual Comprehensive College Prep and Community Fair

New Futuro/ Brighter Futures Summit will be held at Lehman College - Apex Building on Saturday, October 20th, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The comprehensive college and resource fair is free and open to students of all ages and their parents.



New Futuro's main focus is to prepare middle and high school students for the college track. To this effect, the event offers workshops that cover four main themes: financial aid, college planning, careers, and parents/ parent involvement. Some of the workshops will be led in either Spanish or English, while others are bilingual.



The Summit will feature more than 150 educational, community-based and governmental exhibitors and partners. It will also provide bilingual representatives from higher education institutions (community colleges, CSUs, UCs and private universities), and organizations that focus on early childhood education that will provide free resources and information.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers "Dia de Ciencias"

The student chapter of Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at NYU-Poly would like to extend an invitation to students in NYC and their families to attend our "Dia de Ciencias" this upcoming Saturday, October 13th from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. The activities planned out for the day include informational workshops on the general college application process, statistics and opportunities available for Hispanic Students, FAFSA 101 workshops for parents and most importantly interactive workshops where students get to learn about engineering hands on!
