Finalize College Applications and Win 2.5K Scholarship

I hope you have all signed up for as many college and scholarship websites as possible. I continue researching scholarships and passing out information to those that are eligible for the larger scholarships. Sign up for www.fastweb.com and make a FULL PROFILE, and they will match you with scholarships that you are eligible. Start working on your essays because you can use one really good essay for a ton of scholarships!

Also, check out www.collegeweeklive.com. They give lots of options for scholarships and virtual college fairs where you can talk to college and financial aid representatives from around the country. They have a VIRTUAL COLLEGE FAIR coming up tomorrow (Nov 21) – all students who “attend” (sign in, make an account, explore the colleges) are automatically entered into a drawing for a $2,500 scholarship!! The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is coming to RALPH R. MCKEE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOL!

Do you have a big idea? Have you always wanted to start your own business? Do you have an invention or project that you want to take to the next level?




If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should apply for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or YEA! YEA will be offered beginning in the fall, and will take you through the process of brainstorming a business idea, writing a business plan, pitching your plan to investors (think Shark Tank meets American Idol meets the Apprentice), obtaining funding and launching a REAL business. Start as a student, and finish as the CEO of your own company!

Beginning in the fall, middle and high Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High School students at RALPH R. MCKEE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOL will have the unique opportunity to start and launch their own REAL businesses or social movements, by participating in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!).



Started at the University of Rochester in 2004, YEA! began as a weekly class, taught on the University campus. YEA! has since expanded to other colleges, chambers of commerce and high Ralph R. McKee Career and Technical Education High Schools. YEA! will be offered at RALPH R. MCKEE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION HIGH SCHOOL beginning in September, 2013.



Over the course of the year, students will brainstorm ideas, write business plans, pitch their plans to a group of investors, obtain funding, launch their enterprise and actually sell their products or services. Along the way they will file paperwork with the County Clerk's office; work with business professionals to, among other things, build a brand identity and create a website; hear from local business owners; and participate in a Trade Show.

ASCEND EDUCATIONAL FUND, INC: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR IMMIGRANT STUDENTS AND CHILDREN OF IMMIGRANTS

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION SHEET

2013



This spring, Ascend Educational Fund will award scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $20,000 to immigrant students and children of immigrants who are graduating from a New York City high school to attend public or private colleges and universities, regardless of ethnicity, national origin, or immigration status.



Eligibility Requirements



• Must be born outside the United States or have two parents born outside the United States

• Must be a graduating senior at a high school in the five boroughs of New York City

• Must enroll full-time at an accredited public or private college or university in 2013-2014



Application Materials



• Completed and signed application form

• Official high school transcript

• Copy of SAT or ACT score report

• Two letters of recommendation

• Two essays



Selection Criteria and Process



Scholarship recipients will be selected based on qualities traditionally valued and demonstrated by the immigrant community: hard work, resourcefulness, perseverance in the face of adversity, academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to one’s community. A committee drawn from the local community will review applications and select a group of finalists for interviews.



April 15 Application materials due

May 13 Finalists notified

May 18-19th Interviews

May 20 Scholarship recipients notified



Scholarship Conditions



Scholarships will be disbursed directly to the recipient’s educational institution in equal installments over a two or four year period, depending on the type of institution. Failure to comply with the following conditions may result in the suspension or revocation of scholarship awards.



• Enroll full-time at an accredited public or private college or university

• Remain in good standing and maintain a 2.5 grade point average

• Submit yearly progress reports to Ascend Educational Fund

• Participate in mentoring provided by Ascend Educational Fund

SUMMER PROGRAMS AT NYU-POLYTEC FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Help your students get a head start on their academic year.

To help your students get a jump-start on their final years as a high school student, NYU-Poly is offering summer courses in Engineering, Mathematics, and Web Design as well as an exciting CSAW Cybersecurity Program for Young Women in High School. Let Poly's tradition of invention, innovation, and entrepreneurship help prepare them for academic success!

We hope you will be able to inform your students of these exciting summer courses:

Introduction to Engineering and Design

This three credit summer course aims to provide students with a hands-on learning experience, which will provide: working knowledge of contemporary engineering practice, the problem solving process, and the tools and technologies engineers employ, as well as an understanding of the design process including competition, cost, quality, scheduling and manufacturability considerations and the opportunity to practice in an actual design project - building a robot.

Pre-Calculus

This four credit course is designed for high school students who want to improve their Algebra I and II skill as well as their understanding of the fundamentals required for Calculus. Students will learn exponents, multiplication of algebraic expressions, factoring algebraic expressions, working with algebraic fractions, proportionality, rates of change, and more.

Web Design

This three credit course is designed for high school students wanting to learn more about designing for the Web. Students will learn HyperText Markup Language (HTML) - the code structure underneath the Web pages; Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) the presentation layer of the web; and JavaScript, a language for controlling behavior on web pages.

CSAW Cybersecurity Program for Young Women

This program provides a unique opportunity for high school females from the New York City area. Qualified students will engage in an educational program covering the fundamental concepts of computer science, math and cybersecurity, leading to participation in a nationwide CSAW High School Cyber Forensics Challenge hosted annually by NYU-Poly.

Teen Career Connection Summer Internship


I am excited to announce that the 2013 Teen Career Connection Applications are now available! Teen Career Connection is a paid summer internship program which provides opportunities for high school students to gain invaluable experience the professional world. The chosen participants partake in an 8-week internship where they are placed in fields related to their career interests.

In addition to their experience, the participants are provided with



1. $1,250 stipend

2. $300 for professional clothing

3. 2 monthly unlimited metrocards

In order to qualify for the program you must



•be available for the entirety of the program (June 28th-August 23rd and September 9th)

•be a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school

•Live within the 5 boroughs

WE WILL ONLY ACCEPT ELECTRONIC APPLICATIONS COMPLETED THROUGH OUR WEBSITE. This year, we will be selecting 50 teens city-wide. The program is highly competitive so please make sure to FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS ON THE WEBSITE when applying. The applications can be found on our TCC Websiteunder the apply tab. Please make sure to download the pdf before completing the online application. The applications must be completed in one setting. You cannot save and return to complete the application so please review the questions and prepare your answers before applying. Syracuse University Summer Scholarship for Juniors



High school juniors can apply for the Syracuse University Summer College for summer 2013. 

This is a full scholarship opportunity (covering tuition, room, board, books and transportation) where recipients will spend six weeks on campus earning college credit and developing college-readiness skills. Students must be current juniors attending a New York City public high school and have a minimum overall average of 85 percent. 

The online application is available here and is due February 28; the fee has been waived for applicants.

Banking on Youth Competition



Ashoka¹s Youth Venture, in partnership with the Consumer Bankers Foundation (CBF) Foundation and banks from all across the U.S., is excited to announce the launch of the 2nd Banking on Youth competition!
